چکیده

Wetting and dewetting of structured and imprinted surfaces is discussed from a theoretical point of view. An appropriate separation of length scales is used in order to eliminate irrelevant parameters from the theory. This leads to a general description of the wetting phase which can exhibit various morphologies such as droplets, channels or films. We discuss some general features of heterogeneous surfaces, extended surface domains, and line tension effects. We emphasize (i) the new concept of morphological wetting transitions, which occur both for small and for large surface domains; and (ii) the importance of studying the scale-dependence of the wetting morphologies as one zooms down into the nanoregime. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Wetting and dewetting transitions on hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces.

Many natural superhydrophobic structures have hierarchical two-tier roughness which is empirically known to promote robust superhydrophobicity. We report the wetting and dewetting properties of two-tier roughness as a function of the wettability of the working fluid, where the surface tension of water/ethanol drops is tuned by the mixing ratio, and compare the results to one-tier roughness. Whe...

Effect of roughness geometry on wetting and dewetting of rough PDMS surfaces.

Rough PDMS surfaces comprising 3 μm hemispherical bumps and cavities with pitches ranging from 4.5 to 96 μm have been fabricated by photolithographic and molding techniques. Their wetting and dewetting behavior with water was studied as model for print surfaces used in additive manufacturing and printed electronics. A smooth PDMS surface was studied as control. For a given pitch, both bumpy and...

Not spreading in reverse: The dewetting of a liquid film into a single drop

Wetting and dewetting are both fundamental modes of motion of liquids on solid surfaces. They are critically important for processes in biology, chemistry, and engineering, such as drying, coating, and lubrication. However, recent progress in wetting, which has led to new fields such as superhydrophobicity and liquid marbles, has not been matched by dewetting. A significant problem has been the...

Reversible wetting-dewetting transitions on electrically tunable superhydrophobic nanostructured surfaces.

In this work, electrically controlled fully reversible wetting-dewetting transitions on superhydrophobic nanostructured surfaces have been demonstrated. Droplet behavior can be reversibly switched between the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter state and the hydrophilic Wenzel state by the application of electrical voltage and current. The nature of the reversibility mechanism was studied both exper...

Dewetting Transitions on Superhydrophobic Surfaces: When Are Wenzel Drops Reversible?

On superhydrophobic surfaces, drops in the Wenzel state can be switched to the suspended Cassie state in some cases but in other cases are irreversibly impaled in the surface roughness. To date, the question of when dewetting transitions are possible for Wenzel drops has not been resolved. Here, we show that pinned Wenzel drops being stretched out-of-plane cannot reduce their contact angle belo...
